Known as the Jewel of the Weald and home to the Kent & East Sussex Railway, Tenterden is a delightful country town. Enjoy its attractive tree-lined High Street where you’ll find some fine architecture, from white weatherboarding and tile-hung fascias to medieval timber-frame buildings. There are many specialist and antique shops to explore and traditional Kentish hospitality to be found in the town’s many tearooms, pubs and restaurants.
This is an ideal location for gardens (Sissinghurst, Great Dixter, Pashley Manor, Merriments, Emmetts, Yalding, Groombridge, and many more); castles (Leeds, Hever, Scotney, and Bodiam), and historic houses (Chartwell, Knole, Penshurst, Ightham Mote, Finchcocks, Batemans, and many more).
Cranbrook with its medieval layout of streets and alleys is a pretty Kentish market town. Known as The Capital of the Weald, it was once the centre of the region’s medieval cloth industry and the skyline is still dominated today by its most famous landmark, the Union Windmill, one of the finest smock mills in the country. Cranbrook is home to an interesting selection of small specialist shops, cafes and restaurants, and the Cranbrook Museum, where more of the town’s fascinating history is revealed.
